At that time, just as it always is, hip hop was changing. In the mid 80s it was going away from a more elaborate crew based groups to a simpler and more personal approach. Eric B. was a DJ and Rakim was an MC, that's it. But they didn't need anything more. Their songs were perfect and they resonated with people.
